Form 26AS and AIS — Annual Tax Statement

Form 26AS shows every TDS deduction, tax payment, and TCS across the year. AIS (Annual Information Statement) adds share transactions, mutual fund data, and more. Here is how to view and use both.

Introduction

Form 26AS is your complete tax credit report for the financial year. It lists every rupee of tax deducted from your income and paid to the government — by your employer, your bank, your tenant, and anyone else who paid you money subject to TDS. The Income Tax Department compiles it from all TDS and tax payment returns filed by deductors.

The Annual Information Statement (AIS) goes further — it adds financial transactions reported by banks, stock exchanges, mutual funds, and other entities. AIS is what the IT department uses to verify your ITR. If a transaction appears in AIS but not in your ITR, the CPC will send a notice.

Key facts

What Form 26AS shows

Form 26AS is your annual tax statement. It shows every TDS deduction across all income types (salary, interest, rent, professional fees), advance tax and self-assessment tax payments you made, and any TCS collected. It is the authoritative record of tax paid on your behalf.

Part A — TDS details

Part A of Form 26AS shows all TDS deductions by every deductor — your employer for salary, your bank for interest income, your tenant for rent TDS. Each entry shows the challan or BSR code, the amount deducted, and the date of deposit.

Annual Information System (AIS)

AIS is a more comprehensive version of Form 26AS. It includes TDS, TCS, interest, dividends, share transactions, foreign remittances, and other financial information collected by the IT department from various reporting entities. AIS replaces the older Form 26AS for most purposes.

Discrepancy resolution

If Form 26AS shows TDS that does not match your records, check with the deductor first — they may have quoted the wrong PAN. If the issue persists, file a TDS correction return with the deductor's NSDL facilitation centre or raise a grievance at the TRACES portal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I view Form 26AS?

Log in to incometax.gov.in with your PAN and password. Go to 'My Account > Form 26AS' or 'Services > Tax Stats > View Form 26AS'. You will be redirected to the TRACES portal where you can view and download the PDF. Alternatively, go directly to tdscpc.gov.in and log in as a taxpayer.

Is Form 26AS the same as AIS?

Form 26AS and AIS are related but different. Form 26AS shows TDS, TCS, and tax payments only. AIS (Annual Information Statement) is broader — it includes everything in Form 26AS plus financial information like share transactions, mutual fund dividends, foreign remittances, and GST data. AIS gives a more complete picture of your financial profile as seen by the IT department.

TDS is shown in Form 26AS but my employer says they deducted less — what do I do?

Form 26AS is the government's official record — if it shows TDS deposited, the government has received it. If your Form 16 shows a different TDS amount, the discrepancy may be due to rounding or a processing delay. Wait 3–5 working days after the financial year ends for the annual consolidated Form 26AS to update. If the discrepancy remains, ask your employer to verify their TDS return filing.

Can I claim TDS credit if the name on Form 26AS does not match my name exactly?

The TDS credit is linked to your PAN, not your name. Minor name variations (spelling differences, initials vs full name) do not affect TDS credit as long as the PAN matches. If the PAN itself is wrong, you must get the deductor to file a correction with their TDS return.

My Form 26AS does not show TDS from my bank — why?

Banks deduct TDS only on interest above the exemption threshold (₹40,000 per year for savings accounts from FY 2024-25 onwards, or ₹50,000 for senior citizens). If your interest was below the threshold, no TDS was deducted and nothing will appear. Also, some small cooperative banks may not file TDS returns on time — check with your bank directly.
