GSTR-9 — Annual GST Return

GSTR-9 is the annual reconciliation return for GST. Here is what it summarises, who must file it, and when the 31 December deadline falls.

Introduction

GSTR-9 is the annual GST return — the year's final accounting of all supplies, input tax credit, and tax paid. The GST portal pre-fills most of the figures from your monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns, and you confirm that the annual totals are correct.

Think of GSTR-9 as the annual audit of your GST filings. It is not a fresh tax payment return — any additional GST liability should have been paid through monthly GSTR-3B filings throughout the year. GSTR-9 simply reconciles and confirms.

Key facts

Annual reconciliation

GSTR-9 is the annual return that reconciles your monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings with your full-year picture. It includes all supplies, ITC claimed, and taxes paid across the year.

Who must file

All normal GST taxpayers must file GSTR-9. Composition taxpayers file GSTR-9A instead. Casual taxpayers and non-resident taxpayers have separate annual return forms.

Due date

GSTR-9 is due by 31st December of the year following the financial year. For FY 2025-26, GSTR-9 is due by 31 December 2026.

Not a tax payment return

GSTR-9 is a reconciliation return — it does not involve fresh tax payment. Any additional tax liability disclosed in GSTR-9 must be paid via GSTR-3B of the relevant period before filing the annual return.

GSTR-9 vs GSTR-9A vs GSTR-9C

Form Who files Due date
GSTR-9 Normal GST taxpayers 31 Dec following FY
GSTR-9A Composition Scheme taxpayers 31 Dec following FY
GSTR-9C Taxpayers requiring GST audit (turnover above ₹2 crore) 31 Dec following FY (with GSTR-9)

Frequently asked questions

What is GSTR-9?

GSTR-9 is the annual GST return. It summarises all your monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings for the full financial year — total sales, total purchases, total ITC claimed, and total GST paid. It is a reconciliation tool that ensures the annual figures are consistent with the monthly returns.

Who does not file GSTR-9?

Composition taxpayers (file GSTR-9A), casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, and persons deducting TDS or collecting TCS do not file GSTR-9. Nil filers and persons with only reverse-charge transactions also have exemptions.

What happens if GSTR-9 does not match GSTR-3B totals?

If GSTR-9 figures do not match GSTR-3B totals, the officer may raise a query. Discrepancies must be explained or corrected. Persistent discrepancies can trigger a GST audit. The annual return is not a fresh tax liability — any additional tax due should have been paid through the monthly GSTR-3B.

Is GSTR-9 filing mandatory?

Yes, GSTR-9 filing is mandatory for all normal GST taxpayers even if the annual return shows nil figures. Non-filing attracts a late fee of ₹200 per day (₹100 per day for NIL returns) up to a maximum of 0.5% of the taxpayer's turnover.

Where do I file GSTR-9?

GSTR-9 is filed on the GST portal at gst.gov.in. The portal pre-fills the annual return with data from your filed GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns. You review, confirm, and submit the form. The filing is typically done after the new calendar year begins.
