Lounge Spend Condition
A lounge spend condition is a rule that requires you to charge a minimum amount to your credit card within a billing cycle or calendar year before complimentary airport lounge access is activated. The condition varies by card type and issuer.
In India, most premium and super-premium credit cards offer complimentary lounge access as a bundled benefit. The spend threshold typically ranges from no minimum spend on ultra-premium cards like the HDFC Infinia to ₹50,000–₹75,000 per quarter on mid-tier cards like the HDFC Regalia Gold. Some cards set the condition as an annual spend target rather than a per-cycle one.
How the condition works
When you use your card for purchases, the bank tracks your spending against the threshold. Once you cross the minimum spend, the complimentary lounge visits for that period are unlocked. The unlock is usually automatic — the bank credits the benefit to your account within 2–3 working days of crossing the threshold. You do not need to apply for it separately.
If you do not meet the spend condition in a given period, you typically lose access to the lounge benefit for that period. The condition resets at the start of the next cycle or year, depending on how the benefit is structured.
Domestic vs international lounge access
Many cards distinguish between domestic and international lounge networks. A domestic lounge spend condition might unlock 2–4 complimentary domestic lounge visits per quarter, while a separate or higher international threshold might be required for Priority Pass or LoungeKey international visits. HDFC Bank cards, for example, track domestic and international qualifying spend separately in many cases.

Lounge networks in India
The four main lounge networks operating in India are:
- Priority Pass — the largest global lounge network, accepted at 1,500+ lounges worldwide. Most super-premium Indian cards include Priority Pass membership.
- LoungeKey — a global network similar to Priority Pass. Some Axis and HDFC cards offer LoungeKey access.
- Visa Infinite / Mastercard World — network-branded lounge programmes that activate when you use an eligible card at a participating lounge.
- Amex Centurion — the proprietary Amex lounge network, available only on Amex Platinum Reserve and Amex Membership rewards cards.
Lounge visit value
The monetary value of a lounge visit depends on whether you would have paid for it otherwise. A domestic airport lounge visit in India is typically valued at ₹300–₹1,500 depending on the facility. International business class lounges can be worth ₹2,000–₹4,000 per visit. Using complimentary access effectively converts part of your annual fee into tangible value.
Key points to check
- Whether the spend must be on the primary cardholder or includes add-on card spend.
- Whether the benefit is per card or per account (some banks aggregate across cards).
- Whether unused visits roll over to the next quarter or expire.
- Whether the spend condition counts all merchant categories or excludes specific MCC codes such as insurance premiums, government payments, and fuel transactions.
Use the Lounge Breakeven Calculator to find out how many visits you need to justify the annual fee on a lounge-accessible card.
