Education Reward

Education reward refers to the accelerated reward rate or cashback that certain credit cards in India offer on education-related transactions. These transactions include school fee payments, tuition fees, online course subscriptions, test registrations, and other education-related spending categories.

How education rewards work

When you pay education-related expenses using an eligible credit card, the bank awards reward points or cashback at a higher rate than the standard base rate. The accelerated earn rate typically ranges from 1% to 5% depending on the card and the merchant category code (MCC) that the education institution uses.

Most Indian banks classify education transactions under MCC code 8220 (Schools and Educational Services) or 8299 (Schools and Educational Services — Not Elsewhere Classified). Some banks also count online learning platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning under education MCC codes.

Common education reward structures

Different cards offer education rewards in different ways:

  • Flat accelerated rate: Some cards like the HDFC Millennia earn 5X reward points on all online spending, which includes many online education platforms.
  • Category-specific bonus: Cards like the American Express Platinum Travel Credit earn 5X points on travel and dining, but education earns at the standard rate.
  • Cashback on school fees: A few cards offer a fixed cashback percentage (typically 1%–2%) on education transactions with no upper cap.

Eligible education transactions

Education rewards typically apply to:

  • School and college tuition fee payments (online or via the bank’s bill payment portal)
  • Online course fees (Coursera, Udemy, Skillshare, LinkedIn Learning, edX)
  • Exam registration fees (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL,IELTS, UPSC, state-level competitive exams)
  • Professional certification fees (CFA, FRM, CPA, data science bootcamps)
  • Book and educational supply purchases (when made at recognised education retailers)

Things to check

  • Whether the card counts education transactions as eligible spend for milestone bonuses or annual fee waiver conditions.
  • Whether GST or convenience fees charged by the education institution are included in the eligible spend.
  • Whether the reward applies to payments made via the education institution’s own portal versus aggregator platforms.
  • Whether there is a monthly or annual cap on education reward accumulation.

Using education spend for fee waivers

For cards that require minimum annual spend to waive the annual fee, education transactions generally count toward that threshold. Paying ₹10,000–₹30,000 per term in school fees is one of the most reliable ways to meet annual fee waiver conditions on mid-tier cards without changing your spending behaviour. Some cardholders strategically time large education payments at the end of a billing cycle to push across a threshold.

Education rewards vs milestone bonuses

Education spend is often the most efficient way to hit milestone bonuses on premium cards. If a card offers 10X reward points on achieving a ₹1 lakh milestone, and your child’s school fee is ₹80,000 per term, two terms of fee payment will unlock the milestone bonus. The education spend was real — you were going to pay it anyway — but it also serves as a planned acceleration mechanism.

Use the Milestone Spend Calculator to check whether chasing a milestone bonus using education spend makes financial sense for your card.
