The HDFC Freedom Credit Card is a lifetime-free rewards card. You earn 1.5 reward points per ₹150 on every transaction, with no category restrictions. There is no joining fee, no annual fee, and no fee waiver target. The card is open to both new-to-credit customers and existing HDFC cardholders.

Why this matters

The Freedom card earns 1.5 points per ₹150 on all spends. That includes fuel, utilities, and education — categories many cards exclude. Points are worth ₹0.25 each when redeemed for cashback via SmartHub. The effective return is roughly 0.25% on every transaction, with no caps on merchant categories.

Why this card

The HDFC Freedom is the simplest flat-rate rewards card HDFC offers. You earn on every transaction without tracking partner merchants. It works best as a primary everyday card for people who want one card that earns everywhere.

How to Apply for the HDFC Freedom Credit Card

Application details Total time: 10 min · You’ll need: PAN card, Aadhaar number, mobile number, salary slips (if asked).

  1. Check if you qualify — You must be 21–60 years old, an Indian resident, with a minimum monthly income of ₹20,000 for salaried or ₹2.4 lakh a year for self-employed. A CIBIL score of 720 or more helps.

  2. Go to HDFC Bank’s credit card portal — Visit hdfcbank.com → Cards → Credit Cards → Freedom. Click Apply Now. The form is pre-filled if you already bank with HDFC.

  3. Enter your personal details — Fill in your name as on PAN, PAN number, Aadhaar number, mobile, email, residential address, employment type, employer, and monthly income.

  4. Complete Aadhaar eKYC — Submit your Aadhaar number and enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile. This verifies your identity and address electronically.

  5. Upload income documents (if asked) — For incomes below ₹50,000 a month, HDFC asks for the last 3 months salary slips. Self-employed applicants must upload 2 years ITR with computation and Form 26AS.

  6. Submit and save your reference number — Submit the form and save the application reference number. Track the status on the HDFC website or in SmartHub. Approval takes 5–10 working days.

  7. Receive and activate your card — The card is delivered within 5 working days of approval. Activate it via IVR, SmartHub, or any HDFC ATM using a 4-digit PIN.

  8. Start earning 1.5X on all spends — Use the card for every transaction to earn 1.5 points per ₹150. Track your points in SmartHub and redeem for cashback, vouchers, or air miles.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using Freedom for fuel, EMI, or cash advances — These earn 0 points. The 1.5 points per ₹150 does not apply.
  • Hitting the 5,000-point monthly cap — Very high spenders above ₹5 lakh a month earn 0 above the cap. Track your monthly limit in SmartHub.
  • Letting points expire — Points expire 24 months from the statement date. Redeem them quarterly to avoid losing them.

Pro tips

  • Use Freedom as your primary everyday card — Earn 1.5X on all spends with no category tracking.
  • Pair with HDFC Millennia for online shopping — Millennia gives 5% back on online merchants while Freedom handles everything else.
  • Redeem points quarterly — This avoids the 24-month expiry and keeps your balance fresh.
  • Check SmartHub’s Spend Analyzer — It shows which categories give the best return on your Freedom card.
