Best Credit Cards for Food Delivery in India (Swiggy, Zomato, EatSure)
Food delivery is a real expense for most urban Indian households.
A typical family spends ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month on Swiggy and Zomato.
At 5% cashback, that is ₹400 to ₹1,000 per month. That is ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a year. Real money.
The cards that reward food delivery
SBI Cashback: 5% on online category (Swiggy, Zomato, EatSure). Cap ₹5,000 per cycle (cumulative across all 5% online spend). Annual fee ₹0 (lifetime free). Effective return: 5% on the first ₹1,00,000 of online spend per year.
HDFC Regalia: 4 reward points per ₹150 on retail spend (2.67% baseline). Dining MCC 5812 earns 5X (10 reward points per ₹150 = 6.67%). Cap 5,000 reward points per cycle. Annual fee ₹2,500 (waived at ₹3 lakh spend). Effective return: 6.67% on dining, capped.
HDFC Diners Club Black: 5 reward points per ₹150 (3.33%). Dining earns 10X on SmartBuy (33.3% if redeemed via SmartBuy at ₹1 per point — but this only applies when you book via SmartBuy). Annual fee ₹10,000 (waived at ₹5 lakh spend). Effective return: 3.33% baseline, higher via SmartBuy.
Axis Atlas: 5 EDGE Miles per ₹100 on travel (which includes dining MCC 5812, 5814). No cap on EDGE Miles earned (subject to milestone bonuses). Annual fee ₹5,000 (waived at ₹2.5 lakh spend). Effective return: 5% on dining at ₹1.50 per mile average redemption.
ICICI Emeralde: 4 reward points per ₹100 (4%). Dining earns 5X (20 points per ₹100 = 20% effective, capped). Cap: 20,000 bonus points per cycle (the 5X is capped; the 4X baseline is uncapped). Annual fee ₹9,500 (Emeralde) / ₹12,500+ (Emeralde Private). Effective return: 4% baseline, 20% capped on dining.
Amex Membership Rewards: 1,000 Membership Rewards points on ₹20,000 spent on dining (5X on dining MCC 5812, 5814). Annual fee ₹1,500. Effective return: 5% on dining at ₹1 per point average.
Standard Chartered Ultimate: 5% cashback on dining (capped ₹1,000 per cycle). Annual fee ₹0. Effective return: 5% on dining, capped.
The math: ₹15,000 per month food delivery
You spend ₹10,000 on Swiggy and Zomato (MCC 5812). You spend ₹5,000 on restaurant dining (MCC 5812).
SBI Cashback alone: ₹15,000 times 5% equals ₹750 (under ₹5,000 cap). Per month ₹750. Per year ₹9,000.
HDFC Regalia (5X on dining): ₹15,000 times 6.67% equals ₹1,000. Capped at 5,000 points per cycle. Per month ₹1,000. Per year ₹12,000.
HDFC Diners Club Black (10X on SmartBuy): direct dining spend does not earn 10X. Only SmartBuy does. So the earn rate is 5 points per ₹150. That is 3.33%. ₹15,000 times 3.33% equals ₹500. Per year ₹6,000.
Axis Atlas: 5 EDGE Miles per ₹100 on travel and dining equals 5%. ₹15,000 times 5% equals ₹750. Per year ₹9,000.
ICICI Emeralde (5X capped): ₹15,000 times 20% effective is capped at 20,000 points per cycle (₹20,000 in points value). At ₹15,000 per month, you stay under the cap. Per year ₹36,000. But this is unrealistic because the cap kicks in long before.
Standard Chartered Ultimate: ₹15,000 times 5% capped at ₹1,000 per cycle equals ₹1,000 per month. Per year ₹12,000.
The smart routing for high food delivery spend
For ₹5,000 per month: SBI Cashback alone gives ₹250 per month (₹3,000 per year). It is the simplest option.
For ₹10,000 per month: HDFC Regalia alone gives ₹667 per month (₹8,000 per year). SBI Cashback alone gives ₹500 per month (₹6,000 per year). The better option is HDFC Regalia for the 5X on dining. SBI Cashback is the backup if you hit Regalia’s cap.
For ₹20,000 or more per month: HDFC Regalia plus SBI Cashback. Regalia for the first ₹15,000 gives ₹1,000 cap. Then SBI Cashback for the next ₹5,000 gives ₹250. Total ₹1,250 per month (₹15,000 per year). Axis Atlas is another option. It gives 5 EDGE Miles on dining with transfer-partner upside.
The merchant category question
Swiggy and Zomato transactions typically post under MCC 5814 (fast food) or 5812 (eating places).
Most cards apply their dining earn rates to both. HDFC Regalia applies 5X on both. Axis Atlas applies 5X on both. ICICI Emeralde applies 5X on both.
Some platforms may post under MCC 5499 (miscellaneous food stores). EatSure and Swiggy Instamart are examples. Check your statement for the actual MCC.
The bottom line
For most Indian food-delivery users, HDFC Regalia is the right pick. The 5X on dining is capped at ₹1,000 per cycle. That is ₹12,000 per year on ₹15,000 per month spend.
SBI Cashback is the no-fee alternative. It is 5% capped at ₹5,000 per cycle.
Axis Atlas is the premium option. It gives 5 EDGE Miles on dining. There is transfer-partner upside.
The annual savings on typical food delivery spend: ₹5,000 to ₹15,000. The right card pays for itself in 1 to 2 months.
