Credit Card Mileage Runs: How to Earn Loyalty Status
A mileage run is a way to hit annual spending thresholds using a credit card.
You can hit thresholds for hotel elite status, airline elite status, credit card milestone benefits, and annual fee waivers.
The mileage run is a strategic spend pattern. It is not fraud. The spend can be on real purchases.
The hotel status runs
Marriott Bonvoy Gold status requires ₹2 to ₹3 lakh annual spend via Marriott co-brand cards.
These cards are not widely available in India. The alternative is high-status-linked credit cards.
The benefits are 25% bonus points, late checkout, room upgrades, and welcome amenity.
The value for an active traveller is ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 per year.
For Indian cardholders, Marriott Bonvoy status is achievable via Amex Platinum Reserve.
Hilton Gold status requires ₹2 to ₹3 lakh annual spend via Hilton co-brand cards.
These have limited availability in India. The alternative is premium credit cards.
The benefits are 80% bonus points, free breakfast, room upgrades, and late checkout.
The value for an active traveller is ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 per year.
This is also achievable via Amex Platinum Reserve.
Taj InnerCircle Gold status requires ₹1 to ₹2 lakh annual spend via Taj co-brand cards.
ICICI Taj and IndusInd Taj are examples.
The benefits are room upgrades, late checkout, welcome amenity, and 1.5x points.
The value for an active traveller is ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 per year.
Taj InnerCircle Gold is the easiest Indian hotel elite status to achieve.
The airline elite runs
Singapore KrisFlyer Elite Silver requires 25,000 elite miles per year on Singapore Airlines.
The benefits are priority check-in, extra baggage, and lounge access on Singapore Airlines.
How to earn via credit card: HDFC points transferred to KrisFlyer at a 1:1 ratio.
The annual credit-card spend needed is ₹5 to ₹8 lakh.
Air India Maharaja Club Silver requires 25,000 tier miles per year.
The benefits are priority check-in, extra baggage, and lounge access on Air India.
How to earn via credit card: HDFC points transferred to Maharaja Club at 1:1.
Vistara Club Vistara Silver requires 25,000 CV Points per year.
Note: Vistara has merged with Air India. Air India is now the unified programme.
The credit-card milestone runs
HDFC Regalia milestone requires ₹3 lakh annual spend.
The benefit is free 2 domestic lounge visits plus bonus reward points.
The annual fee is ₹2,500. It is waived at ₹3 lakh spend.
Use the card for all spend from month 1 to hit ₹3 lakh. Renew with the fee waiver.
HDFC Infinia milestone requires ₹8 lakh annual spend.
The benefit is ₹2.5 lakh bonus reward points. Plus 12 plus 12 lounge visits.
The annual fee is ₹12,500. It is waived at ₹8 lakh spend.
Use the card for all spend from month 1. The bonus points alone are worth ₹2.5 lakh in flights.
Axis Atlas milestone requires ₹2.5 lakh spend.
The benefit is ₹1,500 EDGE Miles bonus plus 4 lounge visits.
The annual fee is ₹5,000. It is waived at ₹2.5 lakh spend.
Use for travel spend from month 1.
Diners Club Black milestone requires ₹5 lakh spend.
The benefit is 12 plus 6 lounge visits plus bonus reward points.
The annual fee is ₹10,000. It is waived at ₹5 lakh spend.
Route all international spend and high-ticket retail through the card.
The strategy for active Indian users
For ₹5 lakh annual credit-card spend, use HDFC Infinia or Diners Club Black as the primary card.
Use Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon. Use Flipkart Axis for the Flipkart ecosystem.
Use SBI Cashback as backup for broad online.
The primary card gets ₹4 lakh. The secondary gets ₹80,000. The backup gets ₹20,000.
The Infinia hits the ₹5 lakh waiver.
For ₹10 lakh or more annual spend, use HDFC Infinia as the primary card at ₹8 lakh.
Use Diners Club Black as secondary at ₹5 lakh. Use Amazon Pay ICICI as tertiary at ₹2 lakh on Amazon.
The combined spend unlocks both fee waivers and maximises transfer-partner points.
The transfer-partner maximisation
For each rupee spent on HDFC Infinia via SmartBuy flight booking: 5 reward points per ₹150.
This is a 3.33% effective return.
For other retail via point conversion to airline: 5 reward points per ₹150. This is a 3.33% effective return.
Transfer to Singapore KrisFlyer: 1 point equals 1 KrisFlyer mile.
Transfer to Air India Maharaja: 1 point equals 1 Maharaja mile.
For each rupee redeemed as a flight in economy domestic: 1 mile equals ₹0.50 to ₹0.75.
For business class domestic: 1 mile equals ₹1 to ₹1.50.
For economy international: 1 mile equals ₹0.75 to ₹1.50.
For business class international: 1 mile equals ₹2 to ₹3.
A 5 reward points per ₹150 return is a 3.33% effective return.
This translates to ₹1.66 to ₹10 effective return on spend depending on the redemption.
The mileage-run tax
Reward points are typically not taxed as income.
Some banks report rewards above ₹20,000 per year as a perquisite. Verify with the bank’s MITC.
Cashback is generally not taxed. It is treated as a discount.
Reward redemption is not subject to GST.
The annual fee is subject to 18% GST.
The decision
For ₹3 lakh annual spend: use HDFC Regalia or Axis Atlas. These are mid-premium cards.
You earn bonus rewards, lounge access, and fee waiver.
For ₹5 lakh annual spend: use Diners Club Black. You earn 0% forex, lounge, and fee waiver.
For ₹8 lakh or more annual spend: use HDFC Infinia. You earn 3.33% via SmartBuy plus transfer partners plus bonus points.
For ₹10 lakh or more annual spend: use HDFC Infinia plus Diners Club Black plus Amazon Pay ICICI.
You earn 5% or more via combined spend plus transfer partners.
The cost versus benefit
A ₹5 lakh annual spend on HDFC Infinia: the annual fee is ₹12,500 plus ₹2,250 GST.
This equals ₹14,750 total. This is waived at ₹8 lakh spend.
But if you are at ₹5 lakh, you pay.
Reward value at 3.33% effective via SmartBuy: ₹16,650.
Lounge value at 12 plus 12 visits: ₹57,000.
Insurance value: ₹5,000.
Total value: ₹78,650.
Net benefit: ₹78,650 minus ₹14,750 equals ₹63,900.
If your spend is ₹5 lakh and you do not hit the waiver, the Infinia is still worth ₹63,900 per year.
If your spend is ₹8 lakh or more, the fee is waived. The entire ₹78,650 is value.
The bottom line
Mileage runs hit annual spend thresholds for elite status, fee waivers, and bonus rewards.
For active Indian users, the strategy is: use HDFC Infinia for big-ticket spend.
Use Diners Club Black for international. Use Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon.
The annual reward value at ₹5 lakh spend: ₹63,900.
At ₹10 lakh spend: ₹1,50,000 or more.
The discipline: pay in full, redeem wisely, and transfer to airline partners for high-value flights.
The mileage run is the highest-leverage strategy in Indian credit-card optimisation.
