The two mid-premium travel cards

Axis Atlas and Amex Platinum Travel both charge ₹5,000 a year. Both give 5X on travel. Both have welcome bonuses and milestones. The right pick depends on three things: which transfer partners you value, where you use the card, and how you travel.

Transfer partners: Amex wins on depth

Atlas gives 5 airline transfer options. Amex gives 7 airlines plus Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors. Marriott Bonvoy at 1:1 is unique to Amex.

Earn rate on non-travel

Atlas: 2 EDGE Miles per ₹100. Amex: 1 MR per ₹100. Atlas earns double on non-travel spend.

Welcome bonus

Atlas: 2,500 EDGE Miles on ₹50,000 spend in 90 days. At ₹1.5 per mile, that is ₹3,750 in flight value.

Amex: 10,000 MR on ₹1 lakh spend in 90 days. At ₹1.5 per point, that is ₹15,000. Amex wins by 4X. If you can hit the ₹1 lakh spend, Amex pays for itself in year 1.

Milestones

Atlas: 5,000 EDGE Miles at ₹4 lakh travel spend. Worth ₹7,500.

Amex: 15,000 MR + ₹10,000 Taj vouchers at ₹8 lakh spend. Worth ₹32,500. Amex wins by 3X–4X.

Forex markup

Atlas: 1.5%. Amex: 2%. Atlas saves 0.5%. On ₹10 lakh of international spend, that is ₹5,000 saved over Amex.

Lounge access

Both give 8 international + 8 domestic visits. Amex adds Centurion Lounges in Delhi and Mumbai. Atlas cannot match that.

Acceptance

Atlas runs on Visa. It works everywhere in India and internationally. Amex works at premium merchants but has gaps at small shops. Atlas wins on acceptance.

Break-even: ₹15L a year, ₹8L travel

Axis Atlas

  • Travel: ₹8L × 5 EDGE Miles / 100 = 40,000 EDGE Miles.
  • Other: ₹7L × 2 EDGE Miles / 100 = 14,000 EDGE Miles.
  • Milestone at ₹4L travel: 5,000 EDGE Miles.
  • Welcome (year 2+): 0.
  • Total: 59,000 EDGE Miles.
  • Redeemed at ₹1.5 per mile: ₹88,500.
  • Net of ₹5,000 fee: ₹83,500.
  • Return on ₹15L: 0.56%.

Amex Platinum Travel

  • Travel: ₹8L × 5 MR / 100 = 40,000 MR.
  • Other: ₹7L × 1 MR / 100 = 7,000 MR.
  • Milestone at ₹8L: 15,000 MR + ₹10,000 Taj voucher.
  • Welcome (year 2+): 0.
  • Total: 62,000 MR + ₹10,000 Taj voucher.
  • Redeemed at ₹1.5: ₹93,000 + ₹10,000 = ₹1,03,000.
  • Net of ₹5,000 fee: ₹98,000.
  • Return on ₹15L: 0.65%.

Amex wins on raw rewards. But Amex charges 2% forex vs Atlas’s 1.5%. On 30% international travel (₹2.4 lakh), Amex costs ₹12,000 more. Atlas loses by ₹5,000 on net. After forex, both land at roughly 0.5%–0.6% on ₹15 lakh spend. They are tied.

When Atlas wins

  • You do not hit the Amex welcome bonus. Atlas gives consistent milestones every year.
  • You travel internationally often. The 0.5% forex saving adds up to ₹5,000 per ₹10 lakh spent.
  • Visa acceptance matters to you. Small shops and international e-commerce may not take Amex.
  • You do not stay at Taj hotels. The Taj vouchers hold no value for you.

When Amex wins

  • You hit the welcome bonus in year 1. ₹1 lakh spend for ₹15,000 in value — the card pays for itself.
  • You earn Taj milestone vouchers. At ₹8 lakh spend, ₹10,000 in Taj vouchers is real value.
  • You use Marriott Bonvoy. Amex MR transfers to Marriott at 1:1 — a rare deal.
  • You stay at Taj hotels regularly. The vouchers stack up.

The call

  • Heavy international traveller, no Taj stays: Atlas. Lower forex, Visa acceptance.
  • Marriott Bonvoy fan, can spend ₹1 lakh in 90 days: Amex Platinum Travel.
  • Taj loyalist, can spend ₹8 lakh a year: Amex Platinum Travel.
  • Both cards fit your spend: hold both. ₹10,000 in annual fees. Combined rewards often exceed ₹50,000 a year.

Bottom line

Atlas wins on universal acceptance and lower forex. Amex wins on welcome bonus, Taj vouchers, and Marriott Bonvoy. Both return roughly 0.5%–0.6% on ₹15 lakh annual spend after forex. Pick based on your travel pattern. Many Indian travellers hold both — together they return 30%–50% more than either card alone.
